RULE MODIFICATIONS
1. Grades 3-4 and 5-6: Three 60 second periods all starting from neutral.
Overtime 60 seconds. Tie-Breaker 30 seconds. Tech Falls are 10 points.
2. Grades 7-8: Three 90 second periods with choice 2nd and 3rd periods.
Overtime 60 seconds. Tie-Breaker 30 seconds. Tech Falls are 12 points.
3. All grade groups match to be stopped after first score, no falls in
overtime unless it is a defensive fall in the tie-breaker.
4. Grades 3-4: No cautions for incorrect starting positions. Guillotine and
double arm bar are to be ruled potentially dangerous as soon as they occur. 15
second limit on use of headlocks and three-quarter nelson. (Officials are
encouraged to call potentially dangerous sooner for Grades 3-4 than they would
for the older grade groups. Officials are to stop the action if the bottom
wrestler appears to be in an overly stressful situation or when any twisting of
the head and neck occurs. Officials are to award back points earned before
action is stopped.)
5. Crying Rule for Grades 3-8. Wrestlers are to charged a full time on the
first occurrence. Disqualification for the second occurrence.
6. Officials need to be extra observant for skin infections and long nails as
youth weigh-ins often fail to address these areas properly.
7. No hair rule but must be clean. Biker shorts allowed. Head gear optional
but highly recommended. Singlets and wrestling shoes are highly recommended.
T-shirts and shorts are allowed but must be tight fitting. Shoes with metal
eyelets not allowed.
8. Injury Time, Recovery Time, and Blood Time same as high school.
9. All wrestlers will be given at least 20 minutes between
matches.
***Tournament Directors have the option to vary any of the above rules for
their own tournaments. Huskerland Wrestling would like to see club meets use our
rules but does not want to govern any events other than the Huskerland State
Meet and the Huskerland Duals. If a club director wants to have headlocks for
Grades 3-4 be called potentially dangerous when they occur they have that
option. The headlock situation appears to be split down the middle. Half the
clubs want headlocks allowed and the other half want them banned. The board
clearly feels the use of headlocks for Grade 4 and under is not in the best
interest for wrestlers on both ends of the headlock. Wrestlers that enjoy
success with the headlock often fail to learn other takedowns that they will
need to be able to do have success in junior high and high school. On the other
side many young wrestlers that end up in headlocks are scared out of wrestling
for good. The real challenge is getting officials calling it the same. Do you
stop front headlocks? Do you stop reverse halfs? Do you stop headlocks that
occur on the mat? If someone will write a rule that officials will be able to
use so headlock situations are stopped somewhat consistently we will use it in
the future.
