MARCH 2001 HUSKERLAND NEWSLETTER UPDATE
The Huskerland season is now in full swing.
This update I’m sure is the most worded update I have ever worked up.
This update covers many topics that needed to be addressed now.
The good news is this will be the last update till June.
Entry forms for all three of our events are included in this update. Results will not be mailed this year but we hope to get
results up on our web site by Monday, April 16th.
2001 is a huge transition season. We
are having are our latest Huskerland, our first Omaha Huskerland, our first two
day Huskerland, and a new insurance program for starters.
As in all changes some are unhappy about them and some are happy, we can
just hope more are happy than unhappy. We
would like to know if you like that we are going a week later than normal or
not. You will be able to pick from
April 6-7 or April 13-14 for Huskerland 17.
The board is excited about having Huskerland 16 in the Holiday Convention
Center. We feel it will be great atmosphere for our event.
Omaha also has a great deal to offer. Those who have never been to the
Henry Doorley Zoo I hope will work it in. The
SAC Museum located just north of the Ashland exit is also a great place to go.
It appears we will not be getting the Devaney Indoor Track for any future
Huskerlands. They have turned the
site into a state of the art track facility and I have been told that is what it
is going to be used for. We are
looking at the UNO Field House and the Kearney’s Tri-City Arena for Huskerland
17. We need a venue where we
can layout 12 mats, is available for dates above, and located in a city with
over 500 motel rooms. We are open
to other venues, if you think one meets the above criteria give me a call.
It also appears Huskerland will remain a two day event unless we find a
venue that will allow for 20 plus mats. I
have addressed our new insurance program on a separate
page in the update. I have some
concerns that many of the tournaments are not on top of this like they should be
and thus won’t have liability coverage. If
you read one thing in this update I hope it is the Camp
Team insurance program.
A club classification form is now available on this web site (click
here to get the form).
All club directors must complete this form and mail it to Fred Hall by
March 10th to qualify for team scoring this year.
Clubs that fail to do this will not be classified and thus not scored. We will have 5 classes: A, B, C, D, & None.
Note we will be awarding 3
plaques in each of the 4 classes this year.
This is the second year Huskerland has used size of club to determine
classification. No its not perfect!
Clubs that have wrestlers for 6 months are counted the same as clubs who
practice 6 weeks. The old system of
using NSAA classification was not perfect either.
The easy way out would be to do what the AAU does by having no classes or
do what USA does by not keeping team scores.
The board feels we need to encourage the team concept for youth wrestling
even if we can’t make everyone happy. Please
read the information on the classification form carefully. Please refer all questions you have on classification to Fred
Hall at (402) 438-1307 (fhall@huskerland.org).
If you think you have a better way to do classification, type it up and
send it to Fred. Fred has still not
filled out on table help for the state meet.
An application can be found here.
As always we ask you to get your state meet entries to Roxy Howe in a
timely manner. State
meet entries can be downloaded here. Note that Ken Howe
will be in charge of pairings this year. This
should be a smoother situation with registration and pairings being the same
people. Roxy will also have late
entries faxed to her travel agency. I’m
sure she would be happy to book your next trip also! Be sure to double check
your wrestler’s weights on your master entry form before mailing.
We are going to randomly select 20% of the brackets each round to be
weighed. Wrestlers will be required
to wear a singlet and will get only one chance on the scale.
Anyone found to be more than 3 pounds over bracket weight will be
disqualified from the meet with no reentry possible. Wrestlers in brackets not selected will still face the
possibility of being challenged till they wrestle their second match.
We feel we have a system that will force wrestlers to participate at
their natural weight.
We have just got new Mat Masters on our web site.
Check it out by selecting Huskerland Tournament and then select Mat
Masters. I have also listed the new Mat Masters in this update.
If anyone was missed please give Linda Hill a call at (402) 476-9577.
She also wants to get pictures of all the new 5 time champions for the
2001 program. Linda’s address is
508 W. Harvest, Lincoln, NE 68521. To
help Linda out this year we are requesting all new 4x, 5x, & 6x Mat Masters
to fill out a special form at the state meet.
Note she also needs team pictures for the four state champion teams.
I have attached a copy of our rules.
The main concern has been the headlock issue.
Please take time to read the Huskerland Rules and
learn our position on the headlock. It
appears we are still having tournament date conflicts, clubs have the same
problems we have. Sometimes you don’t have a choice, you just schedule it
when you can get the gym. Anyway
our web master is doing a fantastic job with our tournament
calendar. If you have not seen
it, look it up! If you have not put
your tournament on yet, get it on! Also
check your address and phone info on the web site out to see if it is correct.
Anything that needs to be changed or added you can do yourself.
When we dropped the AAU cards we didn’t intend to conflict with their
major events. We knew when we
scheduled the state meet that we were going the same time as the AAU National
Folkstyle Meet in Michigan. We
didn’t realize our Duals Tournament would be on AAU State Freestyle at Kearney
and AAU Middle School National Duals in Iowa.
Note the AAU State Freestyle Meet is two weeks sooner than it has been
and the AAU Middle School Duals are two weeks later.
The Huskerland Duals III will be at
Kearney’s new Tri-City Arena on Saturday, April 7th. Due to the fact we must be done by 4 pm, the 16 team limit
will be enforced for each grade group. So
get your deposit to Darrell Jennings as soon as possible to make sure your teams
get in. Motel information has been included in this update.
Our theory on having the unlimited wildcards was to get more teams.
The teams that load up on ringers will end up in Class A and those that
don’t should end up in Class B. Darrell
is going to check with the teams that enter if they use unlimited wildcards or
limit teams to using 5 wildcards in each dual. Pat Smith, the only 4-Time NCAA
Champion, will be doing a clinic at UNK on Friday, April 6th, from 7-9 pm and on
Saturday, April 7th, from 8-10 am. There
will be $10 charge for this clinic. On
Saturday night the new Tri-City Diesel indoor football team will be playing a
game. Don’t forget to visit the
Archway while in Kearney. I’m hearing they have done a fantastic job with this
new museum. Just wish you had a few
more things to do while in Kearney!
The Huskerland Freestyle Classic will be at Waverly High on Saturday,
April 28th. The plan is
to run 5 and 6 man round robins to provide wrestlers with as many matches as
possible. If we get a big turnout
we will need to go to 8-man brackets. We hope to get more wrestlers giving freestyle a try by
having this event. Waverly has a
new facility that is large enough to run 6 mats and is just 3 miles off the
I-80. Would like to see our club
directors encourage their top wrestlers to enter and provide them with a couple
of practices on freestyle rules and moves.
This is a dead week for wrestling in Nebraska. All the Nebraska USA Wrestling Districts are scheduled for
Saturday, April 21st. The Nebraska
USA Wrestling State Meet is May 4-6 at Kearney.
I have included phone numbers for all 5 Nebraska USA District Directors.
I hope you will encourage state meet wrestlers to wrestle in the Nebraska
USA District Tournaments.
We are upgrading the t-shirt given to club directors to a polo shirt.
In return we are asking club directors to fill out a motel form that
informs us where your parents are staying for motels.
We are getting financial support from area motels for the first time and
just want to make sure we are getting our fair share.
Motel forms are included in the update and will be available at the head
table also. Sunflower Wrestling
will be selling wrestling items plus doing the meet shirts. They are planning to send out a order form that will let you
put your club name on the meet shirts. Awards
are being done ABC Trophies located in Arlington.
They are doing the medals and will be selling trophies at the meet.
Jay Meneely has been doing a great job contacting the meet’s venders.
He is still working on a meet photographer that will do action shots and
medal presentations.
I have also included a proposal for a State High School Dual Tournament.
Please read it over by clicking here
and share it with your high school coach.
Getting the NSAA to add this event will not be easy, but I feel this
event will be great for our sport. I
am seeking high school coaches who are willing to put the effort in to make this
work. Those that want to help can just e-mail me, craigh@huskerland.org.
I plan to go to D-2 Nationals, March 9-10, at Greeley, CO and the D-1
Nationals, March 15-17, at Iowa City despite not being able to get tickets.
We are working on having a Huskerland Social Friday night of the state
meet for club directors and coaches. The
board is looking forward to the opportunity to visit with you at that time.
I’m done typed out for now, see you in Omaha! Craig
