January Update 2004

Young Officials Program - Second Chance
We only had nine people take the test to become a Young Official in November. We our offering a second chance to increase the number of Young Officials in the pool. We have a different test that is due February 14th to Chuck Sherer. The fee is still $10 to obtain a rules test and rule book. Note that he rules meeting requirement has been waived. Application forms can be found on the website. Chuck will be putting names of Young Officials along with Registered Officials who would like to work club events in the near future.

Tournament Calendar
We our concerned that the Tournament Calendar has so few events listed at this time. Hopefully this will change soon. Clubs seeking to post their events on our Tournament Calendar must do the following:
(1) Mail $60 Club Dues to Linda Hill ($30 for Panhandle Clubs).
(2) Linda will then mail a Club Packet that has a tournament form included.
(3) Mail $25 Tournament Sanction Fee to Linda Hill (Free if you use NSAA Officials).
(4) Go to our website Tournament Calendar and provide your meet information.

Club Dues
We have received dues from almost half of the clubs that joined for 2003. Hopefully the other half will do so soon. Getting dues in early is very helpful for Linda Hill to process the paper work in a timely matter. Note club dues fee jumps to $80 if mailed after February 1st.

Camp Team Insurance Program
Reminder to obtain Camp Team coverage forms this year club directors must mail Club Dues to Linda Hill first. The new format appears to be working well so far. This is our fourth year with using Camp Team for our insurance requirements. This is the first year we have made the program a fully integral part of Huskerland. This was not a major step because over 90% of the clubs that joined Huskerland last year also joined Camp Team. This is also the first year that individuals can not obtain season coverage. The individual sales have been a major administrative problem the past three years and the cause for their elimination. The wrestlers for Huskerland clubs that attend "Early Bird Meets" need to encourage their club directors to get their club dues to Linda Hill along with Camp Team fees or pay the higher entry fee at these meets.

Huskerland Duals V
The Huskerland Duals are less than two months away now and time to be getting your entry fees to Darrell Jennings. The event will be held at Lexington High School for the third straight year on March 6-7. We had 12 teams entered in Grades 3-5 and 16 teams entered in Grades 6-8 last year. We like to get 16 teams in each division. Application forms can be found on the website. Note the entry deadline is February 8th!

Huskerland 19
We are looking forward to returning to the UNK Health & Sports Center. Besides being a great venue and location for our event, not having to deal with changing venues for the first time in four years is a big stress reducer. Fred Hall will serve as the meet director for the third straight year. New for this year is a different schedule because of Good Friday. On Good Friday, April 9th, we will just run the two sessions of Grades 7-8. On Saturday, April 10th, we are running both sessions of Grades 5-6 and then run both sessions of Grades 3-4. State Meet Entry Forms will be mailed to club directors in early March.

Huskerland 20 & 21
We have good news for those who liked the venue we used for the 2003 Huskerland State Meet. Our site director, Doug Denson, has signed a letter of understanding with UNK and the Kearney Visitors Bureau to have both Huskerland 20 & 21 at the UNK Health & Sports Center. Huskerland 20 tentative dates are April 9-10, 2005. Huskerland 21 tentative dates are April 8-9, 2006.

Hall of Fame
We are requesting letters of nominations for club coaches/directors who have been working youth wrestling programs for at least ten years and are not members of the NSWCA Hall of Fame. We plan to honor four club coaches/directors each year with plaques presented to them at the Huskerland State Meet. Due to the fact that they are many long serving coaches and directors a well written and detailed letter will be a very important factor in the selection process. These letters must be postmarked by February 1st, 2004.
Mail applications to: Craig Hellwege - 1031 Sycamore Drive - Lincoln, NE 68510

Middle School National Folkstyle Dual Team Qualification
We are looking at taking teams to both the AAU National MS Duals in Iowa and USA National MS Duals in Illinois this year. Jim Allen will be heading up the the team selection process and will be putting application forms and meet information on our website in the near future.

Club Tournament Formats
We have stayed away from making any requirements on how Huskerland clubs run their tournaments and will keep it that way! The following are only recommendations that we would like to see all Huskerland clubs use.
(1) Sanction event as a Huskerland/Camp Team meet.
(2) Use Huskerland Rules.
(3) Use Grade Groupings.
(4) Use only NSAA Registered Officials or Huskerland Young Officials.
(5) Use staggered schedule (Run only one or two grade groups at a time.)
(6) Use regulation sized circles (28' diameters) or at least 25' square mat areas.
