HUSKERLAND 22 Report Great People Make a Great Tournament

Maybe I’m a bit less than impartial, but from my viewpoint as tournament director, what a great tournament this year !
It was a great tournament for many reasons but first and foremost, because of the people I dealt with from parents to coaches to club directors. At some point all of the above made an error or two, I know I did. But everybody asked what happened, discussed the situation and walked away peaceful and understanding with a reasonable solution worked out. One particular situation could have been rather serious, but the concerned coaches proposed a workable solution, I took their advice, they calmed the parent, and we had a mutually agreeable solution. People!

A wrestling tournament of course, features wrestling, and we had some very good wrestling. We had one more 6-time champion this year in Austin Wilson from Hastings Blue Hawks. Congratulations to Austin. But there was so much more. I watched a couple back and forth matches that were up for grabs and we had a few overtime matches with the wrestlers very evenly matched. We calculated from our official entrant number of 1216 that we conducted 1990 matches. We had very few instances where coaches were upset with the officiating, and the officials were quite pleased with the coaches conduct throughout. People! Again.

I was very happy with the quality of our officiating this year. Many commented they thought it was the highest overall level of officiating ever. I was happy to see we had officials from Omaha to North Platte working the tournament and each one was very good. Oh yes, PEOPLE again!!

We had an excellent club directors meeting with about 10-12 directors present to ask questions or let us know their thoughts and ideas. We want those ideas and we’ll at least consider them all at our next board meetings. There were some disagreements but we all left understanding why the other side felt that way, even if we disagreed. People !
I also was very happy with 2 other things easily overlooked. Our 4 Hall of Fame inductees were all very deserving. You can read about them on another page soon so I won’t go into their bios here. But what an outstanding group, and from all areas of the state. So, yes, that’s PEOPLE once more.

I also want to thank every youth club from the western segment of Nebraska who brought kids. The participation from West-Central and western Nebraska continues to grow and I’m quite proud of the fact we’ve gotten your interest. Of all the clubs who won plaques for being in the top 2 of their class, North Platte took home one of them. Many others gave a very good account of themselves and were highly scored in their class.

One more group of people deserve high praise: the 20 or so people that make up the Huskerland Board of Directors. They all take an area of responsibility and they make things work for you. Their names are on the website and in the program book. It doesn’t run at all, let alone smoothly without their efforts. PEOPLE !!

I enjoyed visiting with many of you and getting to know some of you for the first time beyond a name on a piece of paper. And so until we see most of you in April ’08 take care, and remember to send us your ideas on rules/policy/procedural changes and names of nominees for our Hall of Fame.

Fred Hall
