2002 CSG WRESTLING RECAP

Two wrestling highlights, Dan Gable giving the Athlete's Oath and Tim Neumann honored as the Male Athlete of the Year, have made the 18th CSG a very special one for our sport. The Friday clinic given by Dan Gable at Waverly High School was excellent and drew great media coverage. The clinic went over so well we plan to now do one ever year. Dan Gable, a wrestling legend both as an athlete and as a coach, gave a special message along with leading the CSG Athletic Oath at the Opening Ceremonies. Tim Neumann of Lincoln entered his first State Games and took home 5 gold medals. Tim who is now 44 wrestled 14 matches over the two days, not allowing anyone to score Äon him. He is just the fourth wrestler to win at least 5 gold medals in one CSG. The other 3 are are Zac Dominguez, Tom McCann, and Marcus Hellwege. The CSG also named Tim as the Outstanding Male Athlete.  Note that wrestlers have won this award 3 of the 9 times it has been given.  Tom McCann in 1997 and Dustin Terry in 1998 are the other two winners. Two other wrestlers were also given strong consideration for being nominated for this award. Jay Sherer of Columbus in his march to win 4 gold medals defeated the Class A 103 Champion twice and the Class A 112 Runner-up once.  Jay who will be a freshman at Columbus High this next season has won 250 matches out of 264 this past year. The other one was Wallace Dawkins of Lincoln at age 39 brought home 4 gold medals and 1 silver medal. His only lost in 15 matches was to Rob Riedy of Grand Island.

Outstanding Wrestlers by age group:

  • Ages 10 & Under: Brock Sherman of Crete and Jesse Browne of Plattsmouth will share that honor. Both wrestlers won 3 gold medals. Brock was 9-0 and Jesse was 8-0 for the meet.
  • Ages 11-14: Jay Sherer of Columbus. Jay won 4 gold medals and went 10-0 for the meet.
  • Ages 15-18: Joe Ellenerger of Millard South. Joe won 4 gold medals and went 11-0 for the meet.
  • Ages 19 & Over: Tim Neumann of Lincoln. Tim won 5 gold medals and went 14-0 for the meet.
  • Overall Outstanding Wrestler: Tim Neumann of Lincoln

Three records dealing with Iron Man status fell:

  • A record 40 wrestlers earned Iron Man shirts. That smashed the old record of 32 set in 1999.
  • Marcus Hellwege of Lincoln won his 5th Iron Man shirt. The record of 4 was held by several. This was the first time Marcus had wrestled in the CSG since 1997 due to Junior Nationals and National Guard.
  • Kyle Gorsuch of Dix (Kimball School District) at age 7 became the youngest Iron Man. The old record of age 9 was held by Mogan Denson and Andy Pokorny both of Omaha. At 41 pounds Kyle is also the smallest Iron Man ever.
